Marcus added more hot water to the tub, warming it back up, and then relaxed again, Jim the best kind of weight in his arms. His baby was quiet, peaceful, floating happily. It was the perfect time to broach the dreaded caffeine subject. Much as Jim would like to ignore it, Marcus knew they couldn't. He also knew it would probably always be something they had to work on.

Jim hummed softly, kissed his jaw.

"You want to talk about this afternoon, baby?"

"I didn't mean to freak out, Marcus." It was a testament to how relaxing the afternoon had been that Jim didn't tense.

"Of course you didn't. But you did."

"I apologized. I settled."

"But it was avoidable," he pointed out.

"What?" Jim finally shifted, sliding on his thighs.

"You know that caffeine affects you, baby. And it's getting more intense." The best solution would be to cut it out entirely.

"That's because I don't get it!"

"And that's not going to change. So maybe it would be better if you just never had it. Not even for treats."

Jim shook his head. "I'll figure it out, Marcus. I will." Jim was in serious denial.

"Not if you keep denying that the caffeine is what's putting you off your game."

Jim stiffened. "I love my coffee."

"I know, babe. It's not good for you, though." He wondered idly if Jim was as tired of hearing that as Marcus was of saying it.

"I just need to not do it before a scene."

He stroked Jim's belly. "So you'll be miserable at other times? I'd rather you just gave up the coffee altogether."

Jim sighed. "I don't want to talk about this."

"You never do. baby."

"That's not true. I talk to you about a lot of things, but coffee is... like part of me."

Marcus bit back his snort at that. Jim needed him to stay calm and collected for this conversation. "If you won't give it up, you have to accept that it changes your moods, sometimes quite drastically. You have to be willing to admit that."

"I can be irritable, sure." Jim took his hand, played with his fingers.

"Why would you want to be irritable when you can avoid it? You aren't defined by what you eat, or drink, baby." Marcus wondered if this wasn't the crux of the matter.

"No, but..." God, someone had built weird assed food issues in his baby.

"Baby. This -- what we do? -- that's a part of who you are. Coffee is just a bad habit."

Jim sighed. "I don't know."

"It is. It doesn't bring you anything but grumpiness and irritability." They'd proven that time and again.

"Energy. It gives me energy."

"You have plenty of energy, baby." His boy was so stubborn; it meant he had to be even more stubborn.

"Uh-huh."

"You do. And when you're tired you could take a nap, you know." There was always another choice.

"I don't nap." Jim sighed, wrapping one arm around him.

"You relax and recharge after scenes, though."

"I do. In the tub or with you." Jim napped a lot, really. Even if he wouldn't admit it.

"Well, then. You don't need the caffeine, and you can still have the taste by drinking the decaf.
